(NEW YORK) – The United Palace, the opulent and spectacular movie theater that was once home to minister Reverend Ike, served as the glamorous backdrop for Broadway’s night to honor its own, the 2023 Tony Awards on June 11.
The evening was peppered by remarkable wins for gay, non-binary and trans artists including J. Harrison Ghee for Leading Actor in a Musical (“Some Like It Hot”) and Alex Newell as Featured Actor in a Musical (“Shucked”) as Pride Month continued.
“Leopoldstadt,” a play by Tom Stoppard that chronicles virulent antisemitism through five generations of a family in Vienna, won for Best Play, while “Parade,” the Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry musical dealing with American antisemitism in Georgia more than 100 years ago, won for Best Revival of a Musical.
Many of the winners (listed in bold) reflected on very diverse casts including cast members who were gender fluid and showcased a move by Broadway producers to be more inclusive following the COVID-19 shutdown.
